IELTS Speaking Test: Common Questions and How to Answer

Introduction

The speaking test is a face-to-face interview with an examiner. It assesses your fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. It consists of three parts, lasting 11-14 minutes in total.

1. Part 1: Introduction and Interview

Expect questions about yourself, your home, work, or studies. Keep answers between 2-4 sentences. Do not give one-word answers like "Yes" or "No". Always expand slightly.

2. Part 2: Long Turn (Cue Card)

You have one minute to prepare and up to two minutes to speak on a given topic. Use the 1 minute wisely to write down keywords. Tell a story鈥攊t makes speaking for 2 minutes much easier.

3. Part 3: Two-Way Discussion

This part involves abstract topics related to Part 2. Give extended, reasoned answers. Use structures like "On the one hand... but on the other hand..." to show depth of thought.

4. Pronunciation and Fluency

Pronunciation isn't just about sounding like a native speaker; it's about being easily understood. Use intonation to express emotion and stress important words.

Speaking Test Checklist

  • Speak clearly and naturally at a normal pace.
  • Ask the examiner to repeat the question if you didn't understand.
  • Use linking words (e.g., "Moreover", "Consequently").
  • Don't memorize answers鈥攅xaminers will notice and penalize you.

Common Mistakes

Giving overly short answers, speaking in a monotone voice, or panicking when making a grammar mistake. Just correct yourself quickly and move on.

Conclusion

Confidence is key. Treat it like a formal conversation rather than an interrogation.
